Jake Barnes

Jake Barnes, 86, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 1, 2014 while at the Hospice House of Wake County.  Jake was born to Chester and Ida Barnes where he lived his entire life on the family farm in Archer Lodge, NC. He worked hard harvesting the crops and planting trees that generations continue to enjoy today. Family was Jake’s life. Jake graduated from Corinth Holders High School in 1946, the first year that 12th graders graduated in Johnston County.  That was also the first year that Archer Lodge School was moved to Corinth Holders.

Jake married his childhood sweetheart, Sally Gardner, and they were married for over 40 years.  With his passion and love for flowers, Jake worked at Baugh’s Flower Shop and later opened Clayton Flower Shop where he ran a successful business for over 36 years. Jake was actively involved in the Clayton Chamber of Commerce where he was president for three terms, received the Citizen of the Year award and received the first Small Business Award in 1991.  Jake loved his Archer Lodge community where he was a member of the first Archer Lodge Volunteer Fire Department.  In addition to his community, Jake was an active member at White Oak Baptist Church, a church that his father helped build.  Jake served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for over 30 years and adorned the altar table at White Oak each Sunday with beautiful arrangements until his recent declining health.

Jake was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Gardner Barnes, son, Alan Barnes, parents and siblings.  Jake is survived by his daughter, Donna (David) Parrish, granddaughters, Suzanne Walker (Jonathan), Laura Parrish, great-grandchildren, James Walker and Charlotte Walker, all of Archer Lodge,  longtime friend and former employee, Freddie Creech of Clayton.  Jake is also survived by his church family who he loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to either the bereavement committee, caregivers, or cemetery comities at White Oak Baptist Church.

Funeral service 3 pm, Tuesday, White Oak Baptist Church located at 13943 Buffalo Road Clayton, NC 27527 with visitation from 1-3 pm, prior to the service.  Entombment, McLaurin at Pinecrest in Clayton, NC.
