Thomas Elmore Rooks
May 18, 1931 – December 11, 2023

GARNER – Thomas Elmore Rooks, 92, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday evening at his home. He was born in Duplin County to the late Thomas Paul & Cora Rivenbark Rooks. He worked for the News & Observer for many years until he started his own business, Rooks Remodeling where he worked until he retired. Mr. Rooks served his country in the Army National Guard. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jason Thomas Johnson, great grandson, Wyatt Abel Johnson, brothers Sherwood Rooks and Lawrence Rooks, sisters, Doris Crawford, Christine Dickens, Bonnie O’Neal and special cousin, Bobby Rivenbark.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Christine Taratuta Rooks of the home, daughter, Connie Johnson (Harley), grandchildren Amber Johnson Bradshaw (Barry), Brandon Johnson (Crystal) great grandchildren, Caleb Johnson, Wesley Johnson, Ryan Bradshaw, brother Gene Rooks (Donnye), and special friend Ravon Langdon who was his faithful traveling partner.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to McCullers Community Baptist Church, Raleigh, NC, UNC Children’s Hospital in memory of Wyatt Abel Johnson or Transitions Life Care.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday December 16, 2023 at Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel at 11 AM with visitation from 10 AM – 11 AM prior to the service. Burial to follow in the Johnson Family Cemetery in Pearces.

    My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time. I am Ryan’s 4th grade teacher, and he has spoken very highly of his great grandfather. I am sure he was a wonderful man.
