Steve Jerome Powell

April 5, 1970 – April 4, 2021

CLAYTON – Steve Jerome Powell, 50, a happy and special child of God, went home to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday. He was born in Wake County and spent a happy childhood in Garner, playing basketball and even competing in the Special Olympics for several years. Steve loved giving hugs, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, and playing with his building blocks of 40 years. Steve never met a stranger – he was pure light, love, and joy and was adored by everyone who knew him.

Steve is survived by his parents, Jo Ann Balboni (Henry) of Clayton, Jerry Powell (Sandy) of Cary, sister Annette Bakker (Jeff) and niece Danielle of Havelock, brother Johnny Powell (Becky), nephew Bridger, and niece Waverly of Cary.

The family wishes to say special thanks to Kim Shyllon and the loving staff of the Country Lane Group Home of Holly Springs.

Flowers welcomed, or memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics at support.specialolympics.org.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 8th at Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel, 211 W. Third St., Wendell with visitation from 2:00 – 2:50 p.m. prior to the service.  Burial will follow in Central Baptist Church Cemetery.

Even tho I don’t know Steve personally, I want to extend my condolences to his family. He was a “special Child” of God & now he is with him. He sounds like a real special person. I have a special daughter & I can identify with his family. May God give you all peace.

Steve was a very special person. I remember at our family gatherings Steve always had hugs and kisses for everyone. He will be missed dearly but I know he’s in a better place with our Lord. And I’m also sure that my mom and my dad and aunt Frances Uncle Kenneth and of course Grandma and Grandpa will be waiting for him at the gates to heaven. Happy birthday Steve,I love you.

Sincere condolences to all of Steve’s family. I had the honor of having Steve work in my department at Life Experiences in Cary for almost 10 years. We will never forget his funny antics (break dancing and proposing to all the ladies!) and will always remember the joy in his smile. Steve was a hard worker and will be missed by all of his friends here at LE. ❤️

My condolences to the family. Steve will truly be missed at Country Lane. No day will be the same without my little office assistant. I will forever cherish the memories of his smiles, dances and love. Forever in my heart ❤️
