Winston Salem – Shelby Jean Steelman Prevatte, 86, transitioned from this life to be with her Savior and again with her “beloved Baxter” on June 10, 2023. She was born in Iredell County, NC to the late Alfred Martin Steelman and Hattie Lee Wall Steelman. Her love for children made her employment with the NC School System as a teacher’s assistant the ideal job. Her hobbies included reading, cooking meals and doing crafts. She was a gentle, kind and loving mother and wife and wanted nothing more than to be with her loving Baxter again. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Reverend Dr. Baxter Prevatte, her grandson, Benjamin Aaron Prevatte, sister Linda Steelman Godwin and brother Danny Martin Steelman,
She is survived by her sons, Ron Prevatte (Stephanie) of Montevallo AL, Terry Prevatte (Jan) of Wilmington, NC, Stephen Prevatte (Kelli) of Loudon,TN and her daughter, Lisa Ryan (Bradley) of Franklinton, NC.
Grandchildren, Lauren Prevatte Shumaker, Bryan Prevatte {Kendall), Kristen Prevatte Allen, Robert Prevatte, Joseph Langfield, Brent Prevatte (Lauren), Caroline Langfield (Brandon Noftsker), Caleb Prevatte (Alaina), Michael Prevatte (Kaitlin) and Anna Katherine Prevatte Loper (Nickolas).
Great-Grand Children, Kinsley Shumaker, Wyatt Shumaker, Evvie June Prevatte, Faith Noftsker, Carson Noftsker, Aubrey Shumaker, Elise Mae Prevatte and Jovie Aryn Prevatte.
She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
The Prevatte family would like to thank Anthanette Simmons and Jalaine Gethers for their love and care of our parents, Baxter and Jean, for the past 2 1/2 years. They truly were a blessing to our family as they treated our parents as if they were their own.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Baxter Prevatte Jr. Scholarship Fund at Campbell University Divinity School.
A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Wendell Baptist Church, 3651 Wendell Blvd., Wendell NC with a visitation prior to service beginning at 9:30AM.
