Kathryn “Dunk” Vaughan

Kathryn “Dunk” Vaughan

Myrtle Kathryn “Dunk” Painter Vaughan, 94, of Wake County, NC, passed away peacefully August 1, 2024. She was born April 29, 1930, to the late Charlie Baxter Painter and Nannie Mae Arnold Painter. Kathryn leaves a legacy of being a matriarch and leader of not only her family but all who had the privilege of knowing her. Kathryn’s love, service, and compassion will leave lasting ripples for generations to come. Dunk was a hard worker and enjoyed working so much that she retired from Capital Ford twice and was greatly loved by her co-workers as well as she loved them. Kathryn collected chairs, so there was always a place to sit, no matter who came to visit in the house and around the yard, a respite for all who needed to just sit a while. She adored flowers and gardening and was always ready with a shovel if she saw something she liked or a can of spray paint to make anything shine like new again.  Kathryn was also known to have a feisty competitive streak especially when it came to her beloved UNC Tarheels basketball.

Kathryn is survived by her son, Douglas Wayne Vaughan (Carolyn) of Wendell, NC whom she adored; grandchildren, Jason Thomas House (Casy), Johnathan Wayne Vaughan (Dacia), Kenny Morgan, Tammy Morgan, and Larry Morgan; great-grandchildren, Alexa Arnold (Jordan), Damien House (Katelyn), Hayden House, Evan Vaughan, Ethan Vaughan, Addison Vaughan, Abbey Morgan, Olivia Morgan, Emily Morgan, Kathleen Morgan, Alyssa Morgan, Layla Morgan, Lincoln Morgan, and Mia Morgan; and great-great-granddaughter Madelyn House. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Kay House; grandson, Brandon Keith House; and she was the last to go home out of all 10 brothers and sisters.  I’m sure she is bragging to all of them right now about her love for all of you and GO Tarheels.

A visitation will be held 11:00-12:30 pm, Monday, August 5, 2024, at Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory, with a funeral service starting at 12:30 pm. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery, 536 W. Academy Street, Wendell, NC 27591.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Wendell Baptist Church, 3651 Wendell Blvd, Wendell, NC 27591, (https://wendellbaptistnc.com/give/).

The family would like to thank Mike and Sue Moody for their support and monthly visits to Kathryn.
