October 11, 1973 – February 2, 2024

Joseph F. Volkar Jr, 50, of Smithfield, NC passed away on Saturday, December 9th, 2023.

He was born October 11, 1973 in Brownsville, PA, a son of Joseph and Irene Volkar.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph F. Volkar and is survived by his mother, Irene Volkar, sister Monica Proffitt and husband Kenny Proffitt of Front Royal, VA, and sister Loretta Yingling and husband Mark Yingling of Garner, NC and nephew and nieces Cooper Blake, Keelyn Phelan and husband Kiko Phelan, Lizzy Yingling and Abby Yingling.

Joe lived life FULL THROTTLE.  His greatest passion in life was motocross racing, and it’s something he did his entire life.  He never pretended to be anything but his authentic self, and never apologized for that.  He really didn’t meet a stranger.  He could talk to anyone, and usually left them laughing, and maybe even shaking their head.   He loved kids and loved teaching his friends’ kids how to ride a bike…especially if it had a motor on it.   He was ALWAYS up for an adventure and wasn’t afraid to try anything, no matter how crazy it might seem.

While he will be missed in this world by so many, we find peace knowing that he is now whole in Heaven and is likely picking sweet corn with his Dad…or trying to get him to ride a dirt bike with him…. The next time you hear the rumble of a thunderstorm, rejoice in knowing that Volcano Joe is up there revving up his dirt bike in the clouds of heaven, making a path for the sun to shine through.  We hope you think of him and SMILE.

An informal service will be held virtually for friends and family to share stories of all of Joe’s many adventures in life on Sunday, February 18th at 3pm.  Please click HERE to join this event.

Donations can be made in Joe’s memory to Road 2 Recovery, a non-profit organization funded to help AMA licensed professional motocross/supercross and actions port athletes with financial assistance if they sustain debilitating injury as well as providing motivational, emotional, and spiritual support to these individuals and their families.  Click HERE to donate.
