ZEBULON – Johnnie “Tom” Thomas Mayes, 82, departed this life late in the evening on May 1, 2024. He was born in Wake Co. to the late Johnnie Darin & Mabel Edwards Mayes. Tom worked as a foreman for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for over 25 years. He was an master gardener who was always sharing his bounty with others, expecting absolutely nothing in return, always out of the goodness of his heart. Being the amazing man he was and having an outward personality, he never met a stranger. Tom was a hard-working man and loved his family and friends to no end. His time here has ended but Tom will never be forgotten. Along with his parents, Tom was preceded in death by first wife of over 30 years, Alice Williams Mayes and his most recent wife, Cynthia Pearce Mayes.

Graveside service will be at 10:00am on Sunday at the Mayes Family Cemetery, 952 Williams White Rd., Zebulon NC. Family will receive friends after the service.

He is survived by his sisters, Betty Sue Dean (Linwood) and Ann Horton. A special “thank you” to Lisa Ennis who selflessly was a caregiver to Tom and his wife for over 15 years, dedicating endless time and emotions to care for them. The family would also like to thank Tom’s neighbors who also gave of themselves and whom he truly loved.

Flowers are welcomed.

Arrangements are with Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory, 211 W. Third St., Wendell.
