Billy Ray Creech

October 16, 1935 – February 24, 2024

Billy Ray Creech, 88, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2024 at his home in Zebulon. He was born on October 16, 1935 in Johnston County. He was the last surviving child of the late William M. “Will” and Vonnie Allen Creech.

Billy married Earline Raper on November 9, 1952. They were married for 71 years, and he survived her by 16 days. He truly couldn’t live without her. Billy’s family was very important to him. He was a supportive husband, father, and grandfather.

Billy was a very honest and hard-working man. As a young boy, he worked hard to support his family on the farm. After moving to Raleigh, he worked for the State of North Carolina for 30 years, including 3 years at Dorothea Dix Hospital and 27 years at the power plant at North Carolina State University. He always said he was interested more in doing his job well than in his paycheck. He was especially proud to receive his GED in 1984.

After retiring in 1990, Billy was proud to be able to move back to the land that had been in his family for generations. For as long as his health permitted, he spent much time ensuring his property was kempt, and he especially enjoyed mowing the grass. Billy had many stories to tell and could remember specific dates and events from over 70 years ago as if they had happened yesterday.

Billy was preceded in death by his wife Earline, his son Anthony, his infant daughter Donna, brothers Allen, Andrew Gordon “A.G.”, William “Pete” Jr., Dewey Wayne, and Verlon, his sisters Christine and Ada Mae and his twin sister Hilda Faye.

Billy is survived by his son Terry and wife Brenda, his daughter-in-law Jeannine, his grandchildren Jeremy, Stephanie, Melanie and husband Sean, and Allison, and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation is going to be held at 7:00pm-8:30pm on Thursday February 29th at Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory, 211 W. Third Street, Wendell.

A graveside service will be Saturday, March 2nd 11:00am at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens 809 W. Gannon Ave, Zebulon, NC 27597.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Amedisys Hospice of Franklinton for their support.

Billy is one of my good friends… He will be sorely missed. He always had a wonderful infectious smile. I look forward to seeing him and Earline in the resurrection.
