Betsy Hurst Lake, a native of Wilmington, NC and in her adult life a resident of Raleigh and Wake Forest, died Friday, November 16, 2012 after several years of declining health. She was preceded in death by her parents, Adrian D. Hurst and Betty Hewlett Hurst. She is survived by her children: Lynn Lake; Laura Lake Neal and Tom, her husband, and their children Josh, Jordan and Addie; and son Isaac Lake and Beth, his wife, and their children, Ian, Zack and Isaac. She is also survived by her twin brother Bill Hurst and his wife Lillian of Wilmington; her sister, Margaret Clyburn of Raleigh; her sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Eddie West, of Wilmington, and by two nieces and three nephews.
A graduate of Wake Forest College in the class of 1956, she was a gifted, natural musician who served as the organist and choir director at Ridge Road Baptist Church and as Minister of Music at Wendell Christian Church. She was a brilliant jazz pianist with a singular, extraordinary style, who played for many years with the Continentals, Paul Montgomery, Mike Minguez, Ed Moon and many others. She also served the state as an administrator with the NC Department of Corrections.
She will be dearly missed.

Memorial funeral service will be held 3:00 pm, Tuesday in Wendell Christian Church Sanctuary. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
