Barbara Jean Norfolk West
January 11, 1933 – April 17, 2023
WENDELL – Barbara Jean Norfolk West, 90, affectionately known as Bobbie, made her ascension to Glory on Monday, April 17, 2023. She was born January 11, 1933 in Washington, DC to the late Charles Albert and Irene Donaldson Norfolk, Sr. When her children were young, she worked in the office of Greendale Elementary School in Maryland and also filled in as a substitute teacher. After moving to Northern Virginia, she was employed at AMF, McLean Bible Church, Crosswalk, and Comsat Communications. She volunteered at AnGeL Ministries and loved spending time with the other volunteers and the employees of such a wonderful ministry. She had a special place in her heart for the women of Grace Home (a transition home for women), opening her home to host Bible study even while her health was declining. Bobbie’s gift of hospitality was evident throughout the years as she welcomed friends and family into her home, helping them feel loved, cared for, and important. Over the years, many lovingly referred to her as “Mom”, “Grandma”, or “Meemaw” because she treated them as if she were.
In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Oral Roger West, Jr., a daughter, Cheri West and a grandson Jordan West.
She is survived by her children, Dane West (Charlene), Adele Holleman (Larry), Robin Thorne (Hal) and Mary Wolkomir (Steve); her grandchildren, Danielle White (Jeremy), Nathan Thorne, Tanner Holleman (Beth), Heather Thorne (Marshall), Brian West (Christi), Jeremiah West, Amber Holleman, Bradley West (Lauren), Megan Cannon (Adam), Cameron West and Connor Wolkomir, and her 16 great grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 30, 2023, in the Chapel of Mount Comfort Cemetery 6600 S. Kings Highway, Alexandria, VA 22306, with interment immediately following the service.
Visitation will be held from 6:30–8:00 pm on Friday, April 28, 2023, at Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Prison Aftercare Christian Ministries (Grace Home) via its website at www.pacm-nc.org.
